Wedding photography on 35mm film: The Clarendon & The Hare and Billet, Blackheath

One sunny day in May, I made the trip across London to picturesque Blackheath, to photograph the lovely Alex and Alyssa's wedding at The Clarendon Hotel and The Hare and Billet pub. I lived in nearby Greenwich for a year as a student, so I always love an opportunity to head back east and revisit my old stomping grounds.

I was very particularly excited for this wedding, as it was the first one where I was being paid to shoot on film! As such, I thought this was the perfect time to test drive the classic and trusty Kodak Portra at all three exposures - 160, 400, and 800.

What did I think? Well, I really love these photos, but Portra didn't exactly blow me out of the water. I liked how competent it was in low light, and the great skintones, but found the overall result a tad warm/green and did tweak these a fair bit. I would use Portra again if I wanted a really reliable film stock, though the high price (it's the most expensive film I've trialled) does put me off.

Regardless, I'm delighted to share these with you, and hopefully they'll give you some inspiration for your own wedding, whether you love film photography, or you're thinking of getting married in Blackheath.
